The Scottish Parliament building incorporates real design values and innovative concepts. It is a treat to the eye.

After studying this new building complex in the architectural press, and forming a positive opinion of its design and craft (I am not in a position to judge its success in meeting the needs of its users, or its impressions upon visitors), I was disappointed to see a brief menton of it on DW TV, a respectable European news and information broadcast which is carried by one of the local Public Broadcasting channels. The announcer read from a script which focussed almost entirely on the building's unfortunate history of cost overrun and delayed completion; it was described as looking "like a pile of" something (school desks? dustbins? I can't recall).

I expect this sort of thing from ill-paid and uninformed local commercial newscasters, perhaps -- but not from a sophisticated international source.

Disappointing, as I said. I have high hopes for this construction, over time; I would expect it to join the ranks of major public buildings by the world's first-rank architects. A herioc finale to the career of its designer, no?
