By way of fair disclosure, and fine nostalgia...

Back in the day... when I chose to head from Columbia to Berkeley to continue architecture graduate school, part of what I had in mind was to study with Joe Esherick. He was just retiring by the time I got there - still around for design reviews and such, but he'd stepped down from department head and course teaching. I did do an internship with the firm, which was a great experience. I also found other great mentors in the halls of Wurster, of course.

And, around that Hall, Marc Treib, author of this article - as well as author of a hearty list of substantial books that share the deeper background of various west coast architectures - was one of my professors. His (locally) famous seminar on the Scandinavians was one of my most memorable (and challenging) courses at Berkeley. Back in the day... Smile

Thanks, Kevin. I hadn't seen this one before. (After all this time, there still aren't monographs on some of our favorite Northern California architects -- though Hess, Weintraub, et al, have made some inroads lately.)

There is a certain craft sensibility to this work. We don't want to forget that Joe Esherick's uncle was Pennsylvania sculptor and woodworker Wharton Esherick. . .?
