Dear Designers, Builders, and Friends,

ArchWeek Green, from the editors of the leading architecture magazine online, brings you weekly sustainable design and building news from around our planet.

At ArchitectureWeek, we think an expansive view of green building is intrinsic to the goals and promise of green building. Even though many green building strategies have solid economic payoffs, it's not just about economics: it's about a triple bottom line, encompassing economic health, environmental health, and social/cultural health.

People, planet, purse.

A narrow focus just on economic factors, for instance, runs the risk of leaving out, or "externalizing," environmental and socio-cultural factors. We've all learned that can lead to big problems.

A powerful alternative to narrow focus is integrated or "systems thinking." In this approach, green builders consciously try to capture "externalities" and account for them thoughtfully in our plans.

We learn from common sense, but we try not to get stuck by assumptions based on past practices. We learn equally from science. We seek out interconnections between superficially disparate systems, and work to break down the fences that separate various professional turfs.

Common sense is usually a pretty healthy guide, and outrageous conclusions may, on average, be less likely to be true. But some outrageous conclusions are, in fact, true. And when they are, the difference can be important.

Outrageous: The Earth orbits around the sun - even though you can just look up in the sky and see the Sun going around us every day.

Outrageous: Burning of fossil fuels and destruction of forests by humankind has changed our whole planet's thermal energy balance enough to cause severe impacts - even though the incremental degree of change experienced locally is swamped day-to-day by weather.

Outrageous: There's a substantial likelihood that anthropogenic climate change can trigger earthquakes and volcanoes.

No way? Let's make the effort to find out. We can do better than jumping to a conclusion.

** ArchitectureWeek is a green publication. By publishing
this professional design and building magazine online-only,
we save about 48 tons of paper monthly, 50 large trees
every week, or 2500 trees (around a dozen acres of mature
conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a similar
readership on paper - not counting 120,000 weekly newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by a green mix, currently 98% wind energy and 2% solar
power through our local electric utilities, including:
