great article nothing like a good review over the very basics of architecture history in this case history of spaces for shopping. My question is Where is Viktor Gruen in this article?

Viktor Gruen ? shopping malls ?

no, no, no - the article is about public markets. It is much more than the 'retail-experience'.

the public market is a public place - whether with a building or without. Its character, its purpose, its use of public space are totally different to the shopping mall.

there was a half-way between the market and the mall in the arcades (London, Paris, Milan), but they had moved distinctly from the concept of a market.

OK, some malls try to imitate the notion of the market, but I have yet to find one that succeeds in any way.

many markets are ancient - they use ancient areas. Some are open and only on certain days; others have dedicated buildings. They form part of the urban ritual in countries like France. France has departments stores, supermarkets, shopping centres, but they are quite distinct from the street markets.

interestingly there have been a number of competitions to design or redevelopment markets, market areas and the market halls themselves. It has much more to do with urban design than retail planning ....
