Dear Designers, Builders, and Dwellers,
Residential Tuesday brings you top housing news and analysis
every week in this free email newsletter from the editors of
ArchitectureWeek. Hope you had a great holiday!
And now for the view from a different perspective...
"It is a fine feeling to step into the elevator of an
apartment building, press the button marked "PH" and take a
ride to the top -- or at least near the top. And at a time
when the wealthiest New Yorkers are getting even wealthier,
there are more buildings in Manhattan with many more of
these elevator buttons that bespeak the privileges of
penthouse living...
"While many Manhattan developers are scrambling to find
buyers for their newly constructed and converted luxury
apartments, they say they're having little trouble selling
their penthouses, which have become the trinkets of choice
in the wake of the city's record Wall Street bonus season...
"At 170 East End Avenue (at 88th Street), Skyline Developers
sold one penthouse for $12 million, and the one next door
for $14 million. Skyline's president, Orin Wilf, said he had
turned down an offer of $14.5 million to see if he could get
$16 million for each of the two remaining penthouses.
Fifty-one of the 93 units are unsold in the building..."

Current Quiz -
"Analysis serves to understand a problem... then
there's the creative aspect which comes through
intuition."
"I need to go and explore and ask a place -- and intuit
its aspirations, sense its history. I believe that a
place contains the potential for its own
transformation. If one listens, it will tell you what
to do."
"Creating an architectural structure means taking
possession of the earth. It means transforming a
condition of nature into a condition of culture through
man's work and addressing the needs of the community."
These quotes are from the designer of the Leeum Samsung
Museum of Art, Seoul South Korea and Villa Redaelli,
Bernareggio, Italy. Who is this architect?

Architecture Answer - for last week's quiz...

ArchitectureWeek is a green publication. By publishing
this professional design and building magazine online-only,
we save about 48 tons of paper monthly, or about 50 big
trees-worth every week, compared to reaching a similar
readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by 100% wind energy through our local utility.
