Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Nov.10, 2008 — The Arthur Ross Gallery at the University of Pennsylvania will present Louis I. Kahn: The Making of a Room from February 7 through March 29, 2009.

Using Kahn's proclamation that "architecture begins with the making of a room" as a starting point, the exhibition surveys the design of the master architect’s interiors and furnishings. For the first time Louis Kahn’s work will be looked at from the inside out.

"Kahn gave extensive consideration to the tenor and use of his interior spaces, yet this aspect of his work has been completely overlooked,” explains George Marcus, Adjunct Assistant Professor of the History of Art at Penn.

Most of the works in the exhibition will be drawn from the Louis I. Kahn Collection in the Architectural Archives of the University of Pennsylvania. Its unique resources include drawings, models, photographs, correspondence, and project files from Kahn's office.

Kahn’s drawings show the architect's vision of controlled, unified interiors fitted out with his built-ins, cabinetry, lighting, and other fixtures, as well freestanding furniture, modular systems, tapestries, and murals.

This exhibition is being organized at the Arthur Ross Gallery in cooperation with the Architectural Archives of the University of Pennsylvania by students in the Halpern-Rogath Curatorial Seminar supported by the Department of the History of Art thanks to the generous support of Leslee Halpern-Rogath and David Rogath. The seminar, taught by Professor George H. Marcus, is part of the Masters of Liberal Arts Program of the College of Liberal and Professional Studies.

Gallery tours and guided visits will be available by appointment throughout the exhibition.
