Excellent article! I was aware that cement production was damaging, not to mention the big holes in the ground left by its extraction.

I recntly came across a project built using 'lime crete', which I assume uses lime rather than cement as the binding ingredient. An old tradition. My own house was built in 1884 and, judging by the almost white mortar joints, has a high lime content in the mortar. It is as hard as granite too!!

That is a good article. We had just seen in another thread where the embodied energy of concrete is relatively low as it is but we use so much of it that overall it has a large impact on our environment.

Porous concrete is also still being experimented with for parking lots to help with rain water absorption
