I'm as proud as a man still standing on a rock who hasn't yet been washed into the rising tide.

I've always wanted to be an architect and now my job title is one, although I don't yet feel I deserve the description that was formed of those childhood dreams.
As a simple status thing well, I think that's unbecoming and insulting to others: their different backgrounds, capacities, aspirations, opportunities. If it's stated as a simple job description then fine: at least it has the benefit of simplicity. But, for me, the term is coloured something like that of Artist: its an honorarium of achievement, not a straightforward register of activity. |

| Yeah, but that is the problem. We don't have much power. At the moment, the architects I work for have a Building Contractor as a client for some schools buildings. No matter what we try to do to make these schools a good environment, the contractor is simply not interested... they may say they are when it suits them but their actions speak otherwise: they're a business with an attitude designed to maximise profit, whereas I'm an Architect with an entirely different set of values and priorities. It's painful. I'm looking for ways in which changes to this scenario might be effected, so it's early days yet but that's the situation as it stands, for me, at the moment. |

| Yes, it's me. I took it at the weekend whilst watching a movie about the rolling stones... hence the leather look. I was editing some profile details first thing this morning and noticed that one can upload avatars, which I thought you couldn't do here. So I uploaded it. Except I'm feeling rather self-concious now, being the only one... |

"the architects I work for have a Building Contractor as a client"
my deepest heartfelt sympathy.
whenever I have seen design / improvements / progressions suggested to a British building contractor, the response has always been the same: as if they didn't hear it. _________________ Richard Haut has worked with the architectural profession for over 25 years and produces the weekly Richard Haut's Competitions, which has given architects details of many thousands of projects for which they can apply across Britain and Europe. |

This is why the culture shift that is required to make proper partnering work will only happen very very slowly.
To be fair to contractor clients i have worked with a few who have been very receptive to different things and have at least understood the value of design quality as a means to winning work. Thats not to say that the quality argument has always won through, financial realities are financial realities but there has at least been the will to price up alternatives. The problem usually lies once the builders take over from the bidders. By that stage buildability hasnt been properly designed in and after that cost becomes the key driver. The contracting scene in the UK isnt grown up enough. |
